Music as an offering
Music is a fleeting thing, ephemeral and ungraspable – but its impact on the mind and body is totally tangible and absolutely measurable. It has the ability to change the rhythm of brainwaves as well as heartbeat and breath.
I always use music in my practice, whether I’m alone or running a class. It’s been a constant in my life since early childhood. But the grooves of the late 70’s and 80’s didn’t quite have the same ‘tuning-in’ effect as the vibrations I felt recently at a healing sounds meditation workshop. It was an unutterably sublime; somewhat out-of-body experience. After such a divine awakening-of-the-ears, I knew I had to incorporate it into one of the Sunday workshops I run.
You have your very own signature brain wave activity, unique to you. It has a rhythm and pattern – and it incorporates Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta frequencies at varying levels over the course of a day as your brain modulates them to match your activities.
Beta state is one where the mind is sharp; fully alert and ready for decisions…this is usually the state of mind when you walk into the yoga studio
Alpha state is gentler and relaxed; creativity and visualization becomes easier for you….this is the state of mind towards the end of a good yoga practice
Theta state is where magic happens! Your brain activity almost slows to the point of sleep; flashes of dreamlike imagery, inspiration and long forgotten memories. This state of ‘floating bliss’ is where we aim to lead you at the end of our Christmas Workshop this December.
Over the coming months I’ll be incorporating the healing sounds of Gongs and Chakra Crystal singing bowls.
As a meditative tool, these healing sounds offer a gateway out of the monkey-mind (constant chatter, hopping from one thing to the next) and into deep relaxation, maybe even allowing you to dive deep into Theta brain waves. So join us over the coming months and experience musical wellbeing!
